US Trade Policy with McCain or Obama: Politics, Policy, People

What will happen to US trade policy if Barak Obama or John McCain wins the next presidential election? Trade has been a very contentious topic in the current US election campaign, and strong dividing lines have appeared. Will these persist after the elections? How might the new president’s choices affect the WTO and the Doha round? How could transatlantic relations be affected? How will the US’ bilateral free trade agreement strategy evolve? In the run-up to the November elections, how are advisor nominations and final policy orientations shaping up, and what will this mean for the new president’s policy orientations in trade?

Our guest speaker will be Claude Barfield from the American Enterprise Institute, one of Washington’s leading analysts of US trade policies. The session will be moderated by Brian Hindley, Senior Fellow at ECIPE.
