Erik van der Marel is research associate at ECIPE and, simultaneously, researcher and PhD student at the Groupe d’Économie Mondiale (GEM) in Paris under the supervision of Patrick Messerlin.

Prior to his appointment at ECIPE, he studied for his MSc in International Economics at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam and the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris. After his graduation, he went on to obtain an MA in European Politics at the College of Europe in Bruges.

During his studies Erik worked for the corporate and strategic research department at the Euronext stock exchange for a year. He also carried out several consultancy assignments for the European Commission’s DG Internal Market and Financial Services for two years.

Erik is currently doing research in trade in emerging public services with a special focus on trade in health care. He speaks fluently Dutch, English and French and holds a passion for the political economy of trade in services and political economic philosophy.
